Review of Glass (2019) by David L — 17 Jan 2019
I had heard all the bad reviews and the negative score did scare me. But I am a HUGE fan of Unbreakable and Split. This finale to the Unbreakable trilogy left me smiling. There are a few clunker lines but the movie is overall enjoyable.
Plays with many comic book cliches and tropes. Night revisits themes he explored in Unbreakable...the idea that some of us can be extraordinary if we just choose to have faith in ourselves and believe it.
I have a feeling that the story he tells here is one that is very personal for Night. As a director/creator he faced lots of criticism and ridicule over the years. (Some of it was deserved) But Night continued to make his art.
He self funded his last few movies (The Visit, Split and now Glass) and he has shown that he is here to stay. Night is fascinated with belief and with faith. In Unbreakable and Split his protagonists struggle with the fear that their lives have no meaning, that they re ordinary or even worse broken and beyond salvation and hope.
In Glass he again explores the superhero myth - that some whether good or evil are bound for greatness...that they have a role to play in the world and they are not ordinary they are super. I know the critics are roasting this movie.
..but if you loved Unbreakable, Split, and Signs I think you will like this movie. I laughed, I was surprised and at times shocked by the story. The movie did not play out the way I expected it to and that is refreshing.
I was engaged by this movie and think this trilogy is one of the greats. Thanks Night!
