Review of Godzilla 1985 (1985) by Sean C — 23 Jul 2011
Sometimes people need to take inventory of stuff around them, admit that they do not understand it and just take a neutral stance.
Film critics just do not seem to understand what these movies are about and continue to toss them bad reviews. Assuming that it is the movies fault that they do not really get the whole genre.
Godzilla 1985 is easily one of the best of the G movies. It is the first in what would become know as the Millennium series that lasted throughout the 1990's. Plots and characters that carried over from movie to movie were a departure form the 70's Showa era in that each movie was a stand alone adventure for a child friendly hero monster.
Godzilla is back to his angry, Tokyo stomping ways as it is just the bug guy vs. the humans here. No third party nor tag team partners to rumble with. G wakes up hungry, goes to feed and the Humans have to find a way to chase him away. A bare bones storyline free of clutter sets the stage for a relaunch devoid of any old ideas to be stuck upholding.
The American release added footage of Raymond Burr reprising his roll from the original Godzilla as an news reporter. It is a mostly narrative role that really adds noting to the movie except to distract from the plot.
