Review of Going in Style (2017) by Connor B — 23 Apr 2017
It definitely helps that I went into "Going in Style" with kind of low expectations. While the trailers looked kind of fun, I was worried that it would be a one-joke premise with the three main actors sleepwalking through their performances.
Thankfully, though, while many of the jokes can be boiled down to "We're OLD!", Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and especially Alan Arkin bring charm, humor, and a whole lot of fun to a surprisingly entertaining movie.
The plot has a few genuinely surprising twists, and while the film may not have cared too much about any of the side characters, (I didn't even know Michael Caine's granddaughter's name until the last 10 minutes) it really makes you care about the three leads.
The jokes can be predictable, and sometimes the pacing can drag, but when the humor works, like in a shoplifting setpiece, it REALLY works. There were also some entertaining scene transitions, and the direction, done by Sacred Heart Hospital's own John Dorian, was much better than an "old men robbing a bank movie" should have been.
