Review of Gremlins (1984) by Tyrant719 — 04 Jun 2021
Another example of an 80s movie that comes with way more hype than substance. Most of the people that hype this movie up seem to forget that they were about seven when they first saw it and, as an adult seeing it for the first time, it’s pretty annoying.
Maybe as an adult watching the film again, after having seen it at a younger age, it gives you nostalgia for the film, but saying it “holds up” as an adult is purely a misnomer. The movie starts, and carries on with, sitcom-level acting that allows just enough stupidity to necessitate story progression and just enough ingenuity and luck to allow the protagonist to solve their problem.
That sounds like a subpar movie to me. Maybe at seven years old I would have been amazed and then be able to justify that amazement at an older age, but that amazement isn’t there for me and I’m not going to fake it because the fans of this movie can’t handle their favorite movies not being universally recognized as classics.
