Review of Halloween (2018) by Cameron J — 18 Oct 2018
Michael Myers is back - nailing the aesthetic of Myers and with tons of witty call backs to the earlier films, Halloween is a good but certainly not a great film. Going into this film I was hyped as fuck.
This was the most hyped for a film I've been in the past couple of years and I just knew in my mind that it was going to topple all the past sequels and become my second favorite of the franchise.
But did it? It didn't. I left this film a lot more disappointed than I was happy. While nailing the look of Myers and with Jamie Lee Curtis certainly being the best part of this film, I was definitely withdrawn due to the god awful writing.
I mean, some of the dialogue was absolutely cringe worthy and in some instances, in the most intense scenes, they would throw in comedic lines that completely ruined the tension and nature of the scene and that left me rather distasteful.
There was also a lot of pointless scenes as well, and some of them literally being so pointless that they could have left them out of the film entirely and nothing would have changed. And don't get me started with the characters.
. there was only a handful of characters I actually liked; Michael of course, Laurie, and Laurie's Granddaughter (can't remember her name). The rest being uninteresting or just pointless. The worst characters being "new Loomis" and god damn was he not just awful? And Laurie's daughter, Judy Greer's character who was rather pointless and overall a dry character who I was hoping would ultimately just get killed off.
To top everything off, the ending was shit. I read somewhere that they had to go back and reshoot a new ending because test audiences said the original ending they had was garbage and damn, I don't know how much worse it could have been compared to the ending we received.
But anyway, I've rammbled enough. Halloween, like stated in early reviews, is for sure a love letter to the original with tons of callbacks and nods to that first film, and that was for sure one of the best parts about the film.
Some of the throwback scenes we get were great, my favorite being Laurie in the shadows in a particular scene in the third act that kind flipped the position of her and Michael, I thought that was awesome.
But overall the film left much to be desired with bad characters and lackluster writing. I definitely recommend seeing it, but don't go in with such high expectations as I did. I might like it at bit more upon a second or third watch, but as of now, I'll give it a "meh it's alright" overall.
