Review of Harlan County U.S.A. (1977) by Katie K — 18 Jul 2008
I give "Harlan County" two stars because I literally fell asleep during it. I wasn't trying to be rude and I wasn't particularly bored per-say, but I fell asleep non-the-less.
I loved the passion of the Harlan Countians. They were bound and determined to receive their terms and I loved the organicness of their unscripted arguments and protests. Probably my favorite part of the film, however, was the soundtrack. Every once and a while you would get a protest song or an old folk-ish song from those in Harlan County...it was mesmerizing and hauntingly beautiful. A good documentary, but very political. Make sure to pay attention. :].
