Review of Heartless (2010) by Kyle S — 23 Apr 2011
One of the oddest films I have seen in some time, that is meant as a very large compliment. I absolutley love Jim Sturgess, Across the Universe was an amazing film that really opened him up to the world.
I love how Heartless used a soundtrack that was sang by Sturgess himself, who happens to have a beautiful voice. From start to finish, (and his characters weak start and strong finish) his acting was superb.
The idea of making a deal with the devil has never been given such an interesting and appropriate spin. At it's core a tale of revenge, the film takes a few interesting turns and sometimes makes a 360 that takes you for a surprise.
The idea of demon's running amuck in London and a photographer that happens to stumble upon them is great, especially when they eventually effect him directly. The revenge then starts but it turns into somthing much more (and different) than revenge.
The plot is great and builds so much suspense and excitment and doesn't let up like most thrillers of it's nature. The ending made me curious at first but then it made perfect sense and I found it to add even more depth (as if there wasn't enough already).
Heartless is just as the title suggests yet at the same time it's full of heart...hard to explain I suppose. However this sublime film is a must see and one of the best arthouse films to come out of Britain in a long time (note:maybe ever).
