Review of Hearts Beat Loud (2018) by James R — 10 Jan 2019

Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Hearts Beat Loud is a father-daughter drama with some absolutely fantastic music kicked in. Frank Fisher (Nick Offerman) is a record store owner that is on his last lap. His store is failing and he just doesn't have the passion to sell music anymore.

His daughter Sam (Kiersey Clemons) is a young lady about to enter college, but has one last summer with dad before life takes her to new places. The two of them bond by jamming together in a sort of father/daughter duo, but it isn't too serious until one day Sam shows her dad some lyrics she wrote.

The two work together and create a really beautiful song. Sam is too embarrassed to show anyone, but Frank posts the song on Spotify. Before long Frank hears the song playing and finds out its featured on Spotify's New Indie playlist.

Frank wants to being to pursue creating a band with Sam, but Sam is torn between figuring herself out and also still making sure her dad feels wanted in life. The movie is pretty deep and has a lot of drama to it.

There's even more subplots that involve Frank and his landlord, but I just wanted to focus on the meat of the story here. I enjoyed this one mostly because the two main leads have some very good chemistry together.

I enjoyed seeing Offerman and Clemons work off of each other. The music they make as well is just fantastic. There's a warmness to this entire movie that remind me heavy of movies from John Carney including Once (2007), Begin Again (2013) & Sing Street (2016).

I would say if you even remotely like those three films give this one a look. It's a great story about a young girl coming to age and having to make adult choices in life while it's also a story about a father trying to keep the spirit of his late wife alive as well by channeling what he knows best.

It's a winner and I would definitely recommend checking this one out!
