This movie does make a go of exploring the mythos of its setting in a bit more detail, though it's rather internally inconsistent. It does make a better go of it than most of those that follow, though.
In retrospect, actually, some of the growing room that it gives to the cosmology may give it some edge over the original, even if it's not across-the-board superior.
