Review of Hereditary (2018) by Matthew N — 23 Jan 2019
It seems like every year we have the causally marketed ï¿ 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2scariest film of all timeï¿ 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2ï¿ 1/2 1/2 1/2ï¿ 1/2 1/2? and while this again is another case of mismarketing it is a film that is far from the norm of the yearly gore/jump scare compliation.
I strongly suggest giving it a second viewing. Where as normally the first time go around is the lasting impression, the second viewing, in my opinion is where this films use of dread and discomfort really stands out amoung the rest.
Something about knowing what I was about to hear and see (Waiting uncomfortably to hear the mothers gut wrenching cry of discovering something off screen) made the second viewing much more disturbing and truly uncomfortable for me.
Toni Collete gives the performance of her life time and of the year but will undoubtedly go unnoticed by the academy. While I felt there was an unnecessary amount of explanation towards the end and the son in the film was often very good there was a few scenes throughout the movie that he took me out of towards the latter part of the film.
However those are in the end nitpicks and the film as a whole is an above average horror move with brains and balls.
