Review of High and Low (1963) by David F — 23 Jan 2017
There's so much in this movie: a kidnapping plot, a tense ransom payment, an intense criminal investigation. It starts high above the slums in a wealthy shoe company executive's ultra-modern home, lingers awhile, then ends up down on death row.
In between there's suspense, social commentary, and allegory. Works as a thriller and as an x-ray of post-war Japanese society. Gondo, the shoe company executive, is brilliantly depicted as a man whose sole focus in life has been shoes-their design, marketing, and manufacture.
The pride he takes in his knowledge of shoes is astounding.
