Review of Hillbilly Elegy (2020) by Bj33 — 30 Nov 2020
This movie made me very emotional. I felt a connection to each character, for different reasons. After being in law enforcement for 20 years, and experiencing these family struggles first hand, I felt it was very accurate.
The guilt and pain that children face with parents that are addicts. The mood swings, the anger, and the manipulation that the addict uses to continue their drug use. The overwhelming desire everyone has to protect their family.
The abuse that can carry on for generations. Many of these issues are vicious cycles that continue in family trees for generations to come; chemical dependency, teen pregnancy, poverty. It does a good job making the viewer experience the pain that each character is going through, and exposes the sad truth of how unfair life can be.
We definitely don’t all have equal opportunities to succeed. And many times the children in these situations don’t have anyone to “save” them. They are left to fail, and continue the family cycle.
It was all very raw and real. Highly recommend.
