Review of Hillbilly Elegy (2020) by Nepr — 06 Dec 2020
I came to this film b/c of Amy Adams' work in Arrival; in Hillbilly Elegy, she does not disappoint. Her Bev is on par with Meryl Streep's Sophie in Sophie's Choice. Glenn Close' portrayal of Mamaw caught me by surprise & she's truly an amazing actor: she plays the riveting, fiercely loyal, tough, flawed, & undeterred matriarch to save her family from very hard life obstacles & from poor life choices, just so her children may have a chance 'to get out' & in JD's case, 'be somebody'.
The fact that this film is based on JD Vance' biography (& not some conjured screenwriter's fiction of the overcoming hero) strengthens me all the more, & Mamaw's courage, total sacrifice, & hard-earned wisdom deeply touches.
Do not be dissuaded by the professional critics' low ratings: they are paid to push an agenda. The 70's & 80's vibe in style, cars, locations, characterizations, & even the smallest items are so authentic: mise en scene is superb.
