Review of Hillbilly Elegy (2020) by Twall3 — 21 May 2022
I'd seen the trailer a few times and found it uncomfortable. Last night when my wife and I were trying to decide what to watch, we decided to look for something that did more than entertain us. If we're going to sit still and do nothing for 2 hours, we want to be inspired when it's done.
When I saw that Ron Howard directed it, I decided to give it a chance. It was uncomfortable at times, but also engrossing and likable. Near the end we were rewarded by a very cool, clear picture of what it looks like to climb out of a life that's going nowhere and redirect it.
It was also an interesting glimpse of family looking out for each other. Glenn Glose's character was terrific. The adult lead male actor was very natural and likeable. Amy Adams brought great realism to a troubled character.
Very happy we watched it.
