Review of Hocus Pocus 2 (2022) by Jaxman322 — 07 Oct 2022
I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this. Don’t get me wrong, it has its weaknesses. The story was pretty mediocre. I think teenagers probably could’ve created a better storyline. And much of the film felt low-budget.
More like a Disney Channel Original Movie than a Hollywood sequel. I think the creators also relied way too much on CGI over practical effects, and that was part of the reason this movie was missing that same spooky atmosphere from the first one (most scenes were filmed inside a badly decorated studio).
Disney has gotten terrible at making movies. But that said, the Sanderson Sisters were the saving grace of this sequel. I was so afraid they wouldn’t be able able to capture the same “magic”, mannerisms, & quirks of their characters from the original.
Seems like more & more sequels & remakes are getting phoned-in by the actors. But I couldn’t have been more wrong about this one. They were spot-on true to their characters. You could see how much fun Bette Midler, SJP, & Kathy Najimy had returning to play them, and it really rubs off on the audience.
Is it better than the first one? No. But it’s also not a bad movie. Far from it! And definitely worth watching if you loved the original.
