Review of Hoosiers (1986) by Matthew C — 09 Aug 2013
From the team that brought you Rudy, or it's actually the other way around but I saw Rudy first way back in the day. Pizzo and Anspaugh bring their A game to the genre, telling a meaty story about a washed up coach and a town that never amounted to anything.
It's small town basketball, small town ethics, everyday everybody problems. Hackman is stellar as a coach who has something to prove and something to learn. It seems like almost everyone in this story has a kick in the butt coming.
There's no tricks, no craziness, just regular ol' conflict that won't go away. Dennis Hopper gives a fine performance as well. Don't treat this like any underdog story, because it defines the word and it surrounds that plot with compelling characters and great fun.
Love this movie!
