Review of How It Ends (2018) by Bryan D — 16 Jul 2018
This movie has a narrow plot for an apocalyptic movie. Some unanswered questions are fine, but too many leaves the viewer unsatisfied. A thin plot can be fine in a movie if the character development is built well.
The minimalist script proves problematic, here, because as a viewer I did not connect as deeply when characters were lost or found, as I should have. The comedic relief isn't packed with enough humor or presentation to function.
None of this is to fault the actors- there is only so much that can be done with an anemic script and plot. The suspense this movie builds is provocative. The ending was better than I anticipated given the flow of the movie.
I did also like imagining an apocalypse in which characters aren't solely evil or solely good, but rather where each person is a mixed bag of morality given the circumstances. In this sense it was realistic.
