Review of How to Be Single (2016) by Daniel V — 19 Mar 2017
It's cute little R Rated rom com that doesn't quite balance the three parallel stories it's trying to tell. But 2 of the 3 are good! Story 1: Dakota Johnson is so adorable as a single girl who has no idea what she wants or who she really is aka every rom com twentysomething.
The character reminds of her Ben & Kate one, a show I really enjoyed. Rebel Wilson is funny at times and a little much at others but overall she is a welcome ball of energy. Story 2: Leslie Mann is always great and here as a professional baby deliverer who has avoided having one of her own only to realize in her 40s she definitely does.
.. she's great again! Story 3: Sometimes I forget Allison Brie and Anders Holm are even in this, they seem to disappear for long stretches. And where the heck did Damon Wayans Jr come from?! He plays I think a boyfriend of Dakota but their romance is short and relationship even shorter.
It almost feels DWJ was a bigger part of the story, maybe even a 4th Story that fell victim to the editors scissors. In fact, this feels like it should've been a Netflix mini-series because on the surface, these characters seem to be people we'd want to get to know but sadly we aren't given enough to invest our emotions into it.
Leslie Mann's character is the only that seems to complete a satisfying arc. There was a better movie in there, problem is, it would've been at least a 2 1/2 hour rom com. No one wants that. Still, there lots of good moments that make this worth a watch.
