Review of Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) by Omar L — 22 Jul 2018
Young characters are difficult to write. There's a balance between having the kid be too smart or too stupid. When that balance is achieved, you end up with a well-written character, but you're faced with another challenge: finding a performer capable of embodying that character.
Thankfully, Julian Dennison does a perfect job alongside Sam Neill in this story of a foster kid who ends up in a home that is actually a nice place. It's a movie that shows that if you have a good heart, you can pass it to those whom you care about.
Rachel House's hilarious performance as Paula, the Javert-like Child Welfare agent, shows that a job title isn't enough to actually have a heart.
