Review of I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932) by Jens T — 02 Mar 2013
I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang is based on real events about the war veteran James Allen (Paul Muni) who was arrested for a crime he didn't commit, and send to a southern working camp known as "The Chain Gangs" which are infamous for their brutality.
One day James makes a run for it and escapes. He changes his name to Allen James and become a successful construction manager. But for how long can he keep his real identity a secret? Paul Muni give us a great performance.
And the plot is also very thrilling, and it's honesty about the prison system makes it feel like a predecessor to Midnight Express. It's the perfect pre-code honesty that makes this movie so great, and to a lesser essence realistic.
Thumbs up.
