Review of I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale (2009) by Michael C — 01 Jan 2010
John Cazale only acted in 5 films. So why even bother making a documentary about the guy? Well, when those 5 films are The Godfather, The Godfather Part 2, Dog Day AFternoon, The Deer Hunter, and the Conversation, it's probably reasonable that people are interested in your career choices.
Cazale was an actor's actor, a consummate professional who could express crushing vulnerability with a glance and slight expressions. This documentary takes the viewer through Cazale's claim to fame in Godfather, to his final role in the Deer Hunter, as well as his love affair with Meryl Streep that only ended in his death.
Though rather brief, it works because Cazale's career was brief itself, and it gives you a portrait of an actor that likely would have continued to do outstanding work had cancer not claimed him at such a young age.
