Review of I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) by Riff J — 26 Oct 2018
Why's the score so low? Sure, there's an annoying jock guy who's the most responsible for the events of the movie taking place, the only sane girl might be not so different and the killer makes stupid decisions and the identity kind of ruins everything after the movie builds a nice amount of tension.
However, there is still some nightmare fuel, the performances are decent and to be honest, this is just a good old-fashioned slasher film. Just because Kevin Williamson wrote the script doesn't mean that it's a satire.
In fact, I think this movie works better if seen as a mystery with too many jump-scares catching me off guard including fake-outs rather than a direct slasher film. Plus, this was the Scream era so I think this movie definitely stood out since it wasn't part of the Scream franchise or a movie riding off of its coattails (Halloween: H20 anyone?).
I enjoyed what I got in I Know What You Did Last Summer though to be fair, I think a direct adaptation of the book this movie's based on could've been decent (it's not a horror novel at all and it's actually a drama about the teens coping with guilt.
And the victim's a completely different person).
