Review of If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) by Yash B — 31 Dec 2018
This movie is beautiful in every way. Barry Jenkins' direction, the actors themselves, and the extraordinary warmth that radiates from the screen, even after Fonny is imprisoned for a rape accusation.
The flashback scenes of Fonny and Tish's romance are gorgeous, and you feel elated for them. Her family is everything you'd want if you needed support. All of this takes place in a rough world that intrudes and threatens and ultimately snatches Fonny away from the life he was supposed to lead as a father and artist.
It's like the universe could not abide such undiluted happiness of a black couple, and had to intervene. But the spirits of everyone present are indomitable. I felt warm and happy just watching this family on the screen - Fonny and Tish are bewitching, the photography is gorgeous, and their souls never stay in a dark place, despite the slings and arrows.
