Review of I'll See You in My Dreams (2003) by Kate L — 15 Jan 2018
I really like Brett Haley's idea of making a name for himself writing independent character driven movies with actors that can act the hell out of it. Blythe Danner takes a starring turn in a touching, heartfelt, well-acted, dramedy.
'I'll See You in my Dreams' breaks some rules and satisfyingly so. It's hard to imagine this type of movie having an original feel, but even if you see some things coming, the acting is so good that you feel the emotions they are feeling.
Authentic, real, and lived-in are seldom as well executed as they are here. It's a treat. If you're a Danner or Elliott fan you'll love this. What a nice supporting cast: Jane Squibb, Rhea Perlman, Martin Starr to name a few.
There are a couple scenes here that are hilarious, in a 'Golden Girls' kinda way. This is life, this is what it becomes and not a moment forced or inauthentic. Final Score: 8.2/10.
