Review of In a World... (2013) by Amanda C — 27 Jul 2018
"In a World..." released in 2013 follows Carol, who holes up at her sister's house after getting kicked out of her dad's house in her pursuit to be the next big voiceover star. I really enjoyed the film.
I felt that it had a great balance between being heartwarming and funny. I especially appreciated the relationship between Carol and her sister, as well as the evolution of the relationship between Carol and Demetri Martin's character Louis.
Written by Lake Bell, I felt that the strength of the script was the dynamic between Carol and her dad. Her father's incessant narcissm and inability to be happy for his daughter was something that made me really root for the character.
The downfall of Carol's sister and her husband's relationship is something that I would have liked to see fleshed out a little more. Directed by Lake Bell, I felt that the film was well-made. Performance-wise, I thought the film was really well done.
Each of the actors did a great job in their respective roles. Edited by Tom McArdle, my personal favorite series of shots was when Carol and Louis are out doing karaoke together. You can see their attraction and connection growing and evolving over time.
Cinematographer Seamus Tierney excelled. He added a softer quality of lighting that for me was aesthetically pleasing. This was especially evident when Carol finds out that her dad is auditioning for the voice-over gig as well, and Louis and Carol tell each other that they like each other.
As a whole I really enjoyed the film. I would have appreciated the sister and her husband's relationship to have been explored a little bit more, but otherwise I really enjoyed it!
