I had the pleasure of reading the book that this film is based on before watching the movie, and it is an incredible book. The movie does not include quite a bit of the minute details of the book, but the jist of the story is there. But I highly recommend you read the book and compare the two to get the best idea of how they compare with each other.

I really enjoyed the movie. The acting was great, the visuals were unique for Ron Howard's style of film, and the story was on par with the jist of the history surrounding the real story of the Essex, even though they did add some extra stuff for dramatic effect.

Overall I would recommend this film enthusiastically. It is 2 hours not wasted. But, if you want the full power of the tragedy of the Essex, the harrowing tale of survival that the film does not match, read the book. It's one of the best books I've ever read.
