Review of In the Heights (2021) by Kaggwandre — 18 Jun 2021
Capturing theatre and fitting much of its dynamics into a film is no easy task. It probably explains why I had my fears from the day this film was announced. Yet for some reason, this films swiftly handles the task at hand, they know cinemas limitations and clearly understand that things can't simply be lifted from one medium to the next.
In the Heights is a delight to watch, the storytelling, even when it's not completely alligned with the source material, it tries to entertain while addressing issues dear to a Latino or African staying in the diaspora at the moment.
This is whether one is legal or not, then the musical numbers and an amazing job by the little known cast. So, is it worth it? I am Ugandan in a second pandemic lockdown, this film becameall the sanity I needed.
It's a feel good film that will make you say wow a couple of times, if it's not for the music, it maybe for an expression by a character.
