Review of In the Mouth of Madness (1995) by Patrick S — 12 Feb 2008
Looking at the other reviews, I have to wonder if I even watched the same movie as these people. In the Mouth of Madness was AWFUL!
The story takes place in a Pokemon-esque world, where everyone only cares about one certain subject: in this case, the books of a writer named Sutter Cane. Seriously, every single news story, radio broadcast, and advertisement in this film is devoted to Sutter Cane's new book. The only things to be found on store shelves are Sutter Cane merchandise.
But back to the story. It's laughably bad, and not in a "so bad, it's good" sense. More of a "pathetic" sense. It's devoid of any moments of fear or even suspense, but contains some of the most ridiculously contrived plot devices since the "Grendel" bit in Beware: Children at Play.
The dialog is about as believable as Dick Cheney, and the acting is that special brand of terrible that I've rarely seen outside of old Sega CD games. In fact, I'm hard-pressed to come up with a single redeeming quality to this movie, other than that fact that I HAVE seen ones that are worse. Avoid like the plague.
