Review of In the Realms of the Unreal (2004) by Butch H — 06 Sep 2008
Started to watch this and it was so irritating in the way it was made I gave it ten minutes to improve. It didn't. The strikes against it include:
1. Multitude of voices repeating the same snippets of information over and over and over again to make a point or just fill up time.
2. Animating artwork with tinkling chimes in the background. Just because you have the technology to take a static image and add "life" to it, doesn't mean you should. I would rather look at a painting as a painting, and not as a canvas for a Maya animation class to play with.
The real story of Henry Darger is indeed fascinating. Unfortunately, when the wikipedia article is more informative and entertaining than your documentary, then there's a problem.
