Review of Incredibles 2 (2018) by Chris S — 14 Jun 2018
The first Incredibles movie was driven by the midlife crisis of a former superhero. Along the way, marital conflict and issues in parenting, among other themes, become prevalent. The many layers to 2004's The Incredibles were the magic.
The family was relatable and extraordinarily real, despite their superpowers and heroic adventures. The second Incredibles movie set up well in its first half to follow suit, but after the setup the film simply devolved into mostly action sequences, leaving some threads a little too quickly solved - namely Mr.
Incredible's issues being a stay-at-home dad and his jealousy of his wife's limelight. These threads seemed a little rushed in order to get to the Screen Slaver parts. Said villain also seemed a tad undercooked, as it skimmed the surface of some thoughtful social commentary but never dived in.
Nevertheless, the movie delivers a great story of the continued adventures of the Parr family, subverting expectations by picking up at the moment the first ended and flipping it on its head, with superhero illegality doubling down due to the Parr family's actions in fighting the Underminer - a twist I did not see coming.
