Review of Insidious: The Last Key (2018) by Ethan H — 04 Jan 2018
I have been a fan of the Insidious Saga because of the take James Wan does on the Supernatural in Horror. Insidious: The Last Key is the sequel to the original prequel (Chapter 3). This is one film that shouldn't be the first of the series if you are starting, watch the others in order, then watch this one because it has a few connectors that will only make sense if you have seen the other films.
Insidious: The Last Key does a great job focusing on Elise's character and how she has an even larger role in the Saga than we thought. If you are expecting to see jump scares, there are plenty of HUGE ones here for you! (Don't see the film on a full bladder, or else a little more than a yelp may come out.) In the other Insidious movies, we have a primary demon as we do in this one, but The Last Key also adds more demons that are not always dead. The Key Man is the set demon as seen in the poster. The demon has five fingers on each hand, just like any person, but each finger is a key. The film seems to focus on one hand therefore, 5 keys, which is also the name of the town that the story takes place. Each key unlocks a Red Door seen throughout the saga, two of which are seen in this movie and the other three in Chapters 1-3. I think the five keys for five Red Doors was a unique take for this series and closes the gap very well as it ends where it all begins.
I'm giving Insidious: The Last Key 3 out of 5 stars and here's my Consensus:
The Last Key gives a thrilling final ride with strong character development and a perfect bridging story line. Although there were a few times the story seemed to be on a low for a bit to long, it made the series end on a good key.
