Review of It (2017) by Roxanne S — 07 Sep 2017
Completely disappointing. First of all, who cast that actor as the clown? Terrible choice. His portrayal of the clown was hokey. They also made the face of the clown too cartoonish. Then they tried to make the clown "scary" by using ridiculous shark teeth coming out of his mouth which looked like bad TV special effects. Nothing terrifying about it. Also, the other demons (homeless man, woman in the painting, etc...) looked like they were out of a Tim Burton movie. Too exaggerated in a way that made it feel fake.
The real problem was the lack of story telling. This really could have been a bad TV movie. Totally boring. Not once did I feel transcended by the story. It seemed almost like a Cliff Notes synopsis of the story. No character development, no depth, no story translation - BORING. Just another movie with special effects that tries to make up for the lack of a cohesive and compelling story which is really crazy since the book provides so much to work with.
The child actors were not used effectively. Even Goonies had more intriguing acting then this. I don't think the child actors were necessarily bad, but rather misdirected. The director didn't seem to pull out any real fear or terror from these kids. It was painfully watered down. Again, it could have been a bad TV movie. It was almost like they made this movie for children viewers, but left in the gory bloody scenes. The movie was bipolar in that sense. Was it geared towards adults or children?
BIG FAIL.
