No. It really, really couldn't. Nicolas Cage's character was too nice. Rosie Perez's character was too self-serving. I don't know how, but this movie re-established the virgin/whore dichotomy, and it had very little to do with dating.
I expected standard romantic comedy fare, and was disappointed with what I received. There were some heartwarming moments, but this movie aimed for Capra, and I doubt Capra could have made the ending believable.
The movie hinged too much on the fact that something similar actually happened in reality. That doesn't give the movie carte blanche to have an unrealistic ending.
