Review of It Follows (2015) by Joey J — 02 Feb 2016
Takes an interesting premise(despite being built on the cliched tired back of the "sex is evil and you will be punished for it" trope and promptly takes a dump on it.
The story starts off unique, fresh, the main actress is decent, and you feel a sense of unease. That parking garage scene? Nicely done. The intro with the girl running from something and dying on the beach? Was a good buildup.
The characters are thin and helpless to the point of being annoying. I'm not expecting average teens to be geniuses, but come on.
No one questions what this doppelganger thing is, no one looks it up once despite having clear internet access. It follows them, scares them, they screech, they run, that's it.
You get nothing else. That's as deep as it gets. It feels like there should be more to the creature and the ending feels like a cop out. So many unanswered questions.
If the last people die without having sex with anyone, is it over? Do the main character and her new boyfriend end it that way by dying to it? Has anyone tried holding a mirror up to the thing to see what happens?
All in all, feels like there could be a lot more, the acting apart from the main character is crap, they're idiotic, and it's a tired cliche.
