Review of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) by Walter G — 25 Apr 2012
Mad World was made at the tail end of Hollywood's 'Golden Age'.
Back in those days the studio bosses were feeling threatened by television, so they started making 'blockbusters' with lots of stars, more than you would ever see in one show on the small screen.
Unfortunately Mad World, like most of the 'blockbusters', recycled the same old scripts. I've seen the chase scenes in this movie thousands of time in other movies, all of them better than this one. The studio bosses obviously cut corners, hoping to make up in quantity what Mad World lacked in quality.
If you take sadistic pleasure in watching talented people struggle helplessly to find humor in a mean-spirited script (the script writer obviously resented being made to write dreck), this is the movie for you. It depressed me, because it proved that Hollywood no longer knew how to make comedies.
