Review of Jackie (2016) by Robin S — 23 Dec 2016
Great performance by Natalie Portman and interesting perspective on the aftermath of the assassination. But -- the movie is disjointed, repetitive and slow. How many reenacted scenes of Jackie's 1961 televised White House tour were really necessary.
Most of the other characters in the movie are cardboard cutouts of themselves wit the exception being Sarsgaard as Bobby Kennedy who has a somewhat more substantial role. Unfortunately, Sarsgaard was miscast.
Sarsgaard not only lacks any remote physical resemblance to Bobby Kennedy, he can't make up for the difference by presenting a strong impression of the man's personality, energy and passion. Then there is the soundtrack -- the original music has the effect of chalk on a blackboard from the first moments of the film and the film uses "Camelot" poorly at the end -- too loud, too discordant in the context of the movie.
The movie as a whole was a disappointment.
