Review of Jason and the Argonauts (1963) by Allan C — 08 Jul 2014
The story, script and characters are not all that brilliant, but this film get's point for nostalgic entertainment value and sheet fun fantasy entertainment. There are no real stars in the film, outside of maybe Bond Girl Honor Blackman as Hera, but Ray Harryhausen's special effect are the real star.
There's a giant colossus, Neptune, sword fighting skeletons and other wicked cool stop motion creatures, which are what make this film so fun. This film is also greatly aided by a fine score by Bernard Herrmann, although if you're familiar with Herrmann's work, you'll realize that he recycled a lot of themes from prior scores for this film.
Reportedly, Ray Harryhausen regards this as his best film.
