Review of Jigsaw (2017) by Brian B — 13 Jan 2019
7 years after the SAW franchise was meant to have come to a dramatic conclusion; 'Jigsaw' is released. its timeline is confusing as the villain that makes his twist appearance claims to be John Kramer's first enlisted apprentice. However, this notion would unravel much of the narrative surrounding the importance of Amanda and all consequences to follow her. Similarly, it indicates that John had been carrying out these traps for far longer than initially anticipated. Again, calling into question his modus operandi and ultimately unpinning the strong storyline that SAW had been initially built upon.
Taking the poor verisimilitude out of this, the traps are inventive and for some, that's probably the appeal. But for individuals like myself who appreciated the initial clever narrative that SAW brought about, this doesn't hit the mark in any way shape or form.
Ultimately, its a sloppy attempt to rejuvenate a dead franchise. A disappointment to the first three films which were a quality testament to a very intelligent way of approaching 'playing God'.
