Review of Jodorowsky's Dune (2013) by Brett B — 19 Sep 2015
JODOROWSKY'S DUNE is a wonderful, even bittersweet look at one of the most legendary films never made. The documentary paints of vivid picture of what Jodorowsky's version of DUNE would have been like, a film so hugely ambitious, so hugely grand in scope that you can see why it was never completed.
The doc covers the preproduction process in a nearly exhaustive fashion, and though it's shot fairly traditionally, it does make great use of animated subtitles, graphics, moving storyboards and concept art, so it's never not visually interesting.
Jodorowsky - the definition of an iconoclast - comes across enormously well, and his infectiously upbeat and motivating personality is really charming, which makes the one moment where his anger and frustrations over his movie's collapse pour out of him all the more powerful.
It's as entertaining a documentary as you're likely to see, particularly if you're a movie buff, even while it leaves you wishing we could have somehow seen Jodorowsky's vision become a reality.
