Review of Joe Versus the Volcano (1990) by David S — 08 Aug 2008
This movie changed my mind and every time I get scared, I watch it. Last week, I saw the movie "Panic," with William Macy, Donald sutherland, Barbara Bain (fremember what a frosty blond she was in Mission Impossible?) and man, it fucked me up! Patricide is always something that gets to me, especially when my shrink says I need to kill my father, figuratively, since he died 28 years ago. So I was freaked out by Panic, and it was fucking iwth my head, as was the therapist and all my friends. I knew I needed to find courage, and man, that is what JVTV does for me. I mean, it is BRILLIANTLY written and directed by Jon Shanley, of Moonstruck fame. This was the first Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movie and they both do a great job. The music, the surrealism, the adult mythological cues, the Abe Vigoda jokes. What is not to like? FOLLOW THE CROOKED ROAD, and you will be awake...this movie is about awakening from FEAR and living life fully.
So next time you are really scared and life feels like it is shriveling, be a Buddhist and realize, it's all in your head, baby. Watch "Joe Versus the Volcano" and take a klonipan....life is GOOD!
