Review of John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) by Pete S — 20 Feb 2017
Keanu Reeves returns as the assassin, John Wick in the sequel to the surprise hit of 2014. And it's pretty much of the same. The action scenes are terrifically shot and the violence is just as brutal. However this time I felt disconnected from it all. Last time you had the emotional impact of John first losing his wife and then his dog, this time there is none of that and what we've given is a simple revenge plot whereby John is out to get Santino D'Antonio for blowing up his house because John refused to repay a debt by doing one last job.
As with the last story, the mythos within the world in which John lives is intriguing and is explored further in this instalment with Ian McShane reprising his role as Winston, the owner of The Continental hotel, a place in which all assassins take a break from trying to kill each other and discuss killing each other over a G&T.
John Wick isn't a bad film and is very stylish with moment of humour, however this an example of style over content and you kind of hope for something a little bit more in the way of story in between the excellently shot fight scenes.
