Review of Kill List (2011) by Alex H — 21 Sep 2015
I'm not convinced it's not faffing nonsense, and it's been totally upstaged by spiritual successors like Red Riding and True Detective, and there's a lot stylistically that irks me about it, from the boring handheld camera to the sloppy dynamics of the score/sound to the too-cool-for-school hitman BS it pulls once the adventure starts.
And yet, this is a genre I like enough (Hot Fuzz and The Wicker Man are other examples, on top of the two shows mentioned above) that I was willing to look past all that and still enjoy myself. The relationships are unique and the dialogue is generally rich enough that the characters stay believable even as the story gets totally up its own ass, tossing out suggestions and twists willy-fuckin-nilly.
I don't think it's as good as any of those other examples, but it's fun in a video game-y sorta way.
