Review of Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) by Byron B — 12 Dec 2018
Nearly two years after seeing this I saw Coraline and have previously seen ParaNorman, all by the studio Laika. Laika is a Portland stop-motion animation studio with a Burtonesque gothic style. I am a fan of Japanese films and precocious kid heroes, but there were things about this story that didn't take it from good to great.
There are a few Asian actors in the voice cast, but none of the lead characters are voiced by Asians. This is a problem. Often the visuals are stunning with a little CGI assisting the stop-motion puppets and sets.
The whole story only has a thin veneer of Japanese culture/Samurai adventure attached like a papier-mâché project.
