Review of Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) by Dane V — 06 Jan 2019
The first 10 minutes were brilliant, it begins as one of the purest interpretations of the heroes journey I have ever seen.... but it quickly become apparent that the screenwriter had no idea what the heroes journey is, interpreting every step in the most literal fashion possible and completely overlooking the actual emotional/character growth that the steps in the journey are designed to spur on in a character.
Every challenge kubo faces is shallow, a literal fight, or a poor attempt to touch on something meaningful, good try, but ultimately disappointing and slightly boring. The animation is stunning though, and the visual, and sound design is incredible, as well as the acting, a good team, with a bad screenplay.
