Review of Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) by Cameron H — 19 Jul 2017
Kubo's striking visual effects immediately immerse you into Japan's Edo period, & sweep you on the mythical journeys that happen within it. Kubo follows an over-used 'chosen one' storyline; discovering more about his family and himself.
I was hoping for something more unique. Kubo's strong characterisation of the protagonist ensures his appeal & increases audience's investment. He's mature, but not too mature. Kubo & the Two Strings follows a rather predictable storyline until the big twist is revealed near the end.
It succeeded in surprising me. Kids will enjoy Kubo & the Two Strings for its sense of adventure, adults for Kubo's justice motive and incorporation of Japanese culture. Kubo & The Two Strings is a deep, heartfelt story incorporating challenging themes and culture.
It's also great fun.
