Review of Kung Fury (2015) by Cameron H — 31 May 2016
The first thirty seconds of Kung Fury should clue any 20+-year-old viewer into what the next half hour should entail -- a loving, but relentlessly "ironic" ode to 1980s sci-fi/action, right down to errors in VHS tape playback during some fight scenes.
Kung Fury really is nothing more than that, and if this is what you want to watch, I don't believe you will be totally disappointed. I never felt degraded. Personally, even when I fully indulged in the self-aware ridiculousness of the action, I was disappointed in the anti-climactic fight.
It wasn't bad. Our hero Kung Fury, Triceracop, Thor, Viking babes, and their T Rex mount VERSUS Hitler and his kung fu nazis was as good as it could have been, really. Past that, it seemed like the movie simply wanted to set up for a better sequel.
Considering how this was funded through a Kickstarter, that doesn't excite me for another movie. Rather, I have less faith in director, screenwriter, and star David Sandberg to make a sincerely great movie.
