Review of Lady Bird (2017) by Mike W — 08 Dec 2017
My review should be taken as a warning and not to draw the conclusion that Lady Bird is a bad movie. It is not. I love the cast and see no technical issue with the movie. But it is still a fair review: the movie didn't work on me at all.
I am 41 and I have a 11-year-old daughter. So I should have no problem to relate to the story. And even if I did, I feel like everything in that movie is too artificial, it's almost like an emotional Swiss clock.
Everything is made to create empathy but a fake one... My main issue is that it is too obvious that redemption is the essence of the writing for this play. Being a teenager is a tough time. We ALL have said horrible things to our parents.
We ALL did. Staying stuck on this is immature. There is no good justification to say horrible things to the people who love you the most and will, all their life, but there is no other way around. Being a teenager is transitioning from being a clone to being a self.
The redemption comes naturally when the teen becomes or will become a parent. And it is easy to get over it by telling your parents you love them. I feel sorry for Greta Gerwig but I am not sure making a movie is the best therapy.
.. And that's what Lady Bird is a therapy for people who are still struggling with their time as a teenager... Lady Bird is a succession of cliché of a great teenager growing up (catholic school, first kiss, first sex, fight with parents, etc.
). Be aware of that before wasting your time...
