There is a difference between having something there with nothing there and having nothing there with nothing there. To me, there was just nothing there. The character is too distant to feel sympathy for, and the development seems very unrealistic.
You might call Blake a tortured artist and that's what drives him over the edge, but the acting sort of fails because I could not see that. Gus van Sant's movies are all very awkward and he seems to do that on purpose just for the sake of being awkward.
I liked "Milk" but then again this man re-made Psycho.
