Review of Life As A House (2001) by Lehho R — 12 Dec 2010
It's especially satisfying after a long wait to watch a movie that was received by critics unenthusiastically, and to love it. I have such high esteem for Kristin Scott Thomas, but haven't enjoyed seeing her in anything as much as I did in Four Weddings and a Funeral.
This was only barely sentimental, which made it all the more powerful. It doesn't guide the viewer's reactions as much as it draws forth his own personal connections to it. It made me choke up several times.
I kind of love what I think was a mistake - the scene where George (Kline) sits in a lawn chair on his newly laid floor beams, watching the sun low over the Pacific and says Good morning to Sam (Christensen).
He understands now how this film might have led Christensen to land roles in Star Wars and Shattered Glass, immediately subsequent. Not shabby. Mary Steenburgen was hot. I loved Jena Malone in Saved! and love her no less here.
Crushing hard.
