Review of Lilo & Stitch (2002) by Azia D — 08 Nov 2018
I would rate this movie 5/5 stars because of it's ability to capture important themes relating to family and gender norms. Even though this is a children's movie Disney was able to touch on very important issues that real families have to deal with today.
Lilo is a young girl who is raised by her older sister because of the death of their parents at a young age. Lilo's sister, Nani, struggles to find work to support and take care of her younger sister while also dealing with a social worker who threatens to take Lilo away from her if he finds that Lilo is not in a safe and stable home.
In the movie we see the theme of the "single mother" (in this case a single sister), who is lower class, struggling to support herself and sister while also trying to please a social worker which is a very real issue that happens to families today.
This movie portrays an untraditional depiction of family and like the movie states, they may be a small and broken family, but they are still family and no one gets left behind or forgotten. This movie showed, that even though they do not have a "perfect traditional family" does not make them any less of a family.
